Ashes To Ashes, Dust To Dust

As I opened my eyes, all I could see around me was white. It took a few minutes before I was able to stand on my own two legs; and as soon as I did, a heavy gust of freezing wind struck me, causing me to shiver. I looked ahead to see a vast expanse of tombstones littering the dead, snowy ground surrounding me.
I mustered up all the courage I had to begin walking forward, as I looked around me at the plethora of graves. I recognized every name inscribed on them.
"What is this place?… Why are the names of everyone in my waking life here?…"
I was deep in my own thoughts when I tripped over my own feet. My face smashed against the cold, hard dirt. I began to get up before I was drawn back in by a strange noise. I put my ear up against the dirt of the grave, and listened…
My heart sank as the sound coming from beneath me grew louder. I could hear… people, but… something wasn't right. They were screaming, as if they were in pure agony. As I got closer, I swore I could feel the ground beneath me get increasingly warmer.
I got back up and tried to push the haunting sound of their screams to the back of my head, but I just… couldn't. I continued walking through the snow, still afflicted with shock and disgust by what I'd just heard. The tombstones seemed unending, intermittently littering the ground everywhere I went.
Just as I thought the terrain was never-changing, I eventually reached a forest. All of the trees seemed to be dead and rotting. I couldn't escape the graves, seeing as they littered the forest ground as well.
After walking through the forest for so long, it felt as though my legs were about to break. Right as I felt like I could no longer continue, I found a grave, except this one was empty — no dirt, no coffin, no body — just a six-foot-deep pit where someone should've been.
I felt as though the grave was… Calling me, and after a few seconds of consideration, I slowly crept into the hole. A loud thud could be heard as I landed on the soft ground below.
I got down and put my back against the floor of the pit. When I lay in it, I felt… At peace. All of my ailments seemingly vanished as I nearly dozed off. I could see a figure above me wielding some kind of tool, but I paid no attention to it. A moment later, I felt something cold and heavy being carelessly dropped onto my face and body.
It got heavier and heavier as it was getting increasingly harder to breathe, until I eventually couldn't see out of the grave. I felt lightheaded. I felt on the brink of eternal slumber. As my eyes slowly shut, I began questioning everything that had led me up to this point. As I thought about it, I hadn't fully realized whose name was on the tombstone above the pit. It was mine…
