Darkness
Shadow

"They have no eyes, but they see. No ears, but they hear. No nose, but they smell. They follow slowly, encroaching in darkness, always moving closer. They never tire, always persistent, always looking. They stand at varying heights and sizes, similar to you and I. They do not speak, and they cannot be hurt, for they do not feel.

No gender to speak of; pure embodiments of darkness, they are what you fear is lurking in the dark every time you doze asleep. I remember. My childhood home — they roamed, the terror they brought, fear like no other. The same start, the same end. Hiding, fearful of the slow approach, of the footsteps that couldn’t be heard.

I hid, under the bed like a scared child, helpless, hoping this time would be different. It never was. Emotionless. Hollow. My plight for help was met with silence, silence even darker than the rooms I was trapped in, than the being that persisted me. I wake up in a cold sweat. I've seen them again for the first time in years; why must they continue to follow me — Why must they continue to torment me… why?"
